Resources There are thousands of Prius owners around the world. When many of these people find a need for a document or appendix to a manual, they simply make one themselves. They do this not because they are looking for copyrights or for fame but rather to share with their fellow Prius owners. This page holds many of those items and links to other sites where you can find additional material. Also, publications and documents made available by other sources such as Toyota pertaining to the Prius will be made available here. Those items are identified and designated as such. We will keep those items here until asked/told to remove them. We hope you find something here that
you can use. Prius Reference Materials
The Pocket Reference Guide is a summary guide for basic vehicle operations.
It contains brief descriptions of fundamental operations so you can locate and
use the vehicle’s main equipment quickly and easily.
This document was created by Tony Schaefer for the PriusChat
community. It contains all the voice commands, sorted into functional
groups, to control the navigation, air conditioning, and audio.
You should have received this document with your new Prius.
General Reading Material
Original by Hideshi Itazaki Documenting the
introduction and distribution of the Prius from Japan in 1997 to North
America and Europe in 2000.
This interesting article from CNNMoney, 2/221/2006 tells
Toyota's story of punishing deadlines, skeptical dealers, finicky batteries, and
its own risk-averse culture and how it brought the now-famous hybrid to market.
Doctor Fusco, long-time Prius owner and driver, wrote this
document early in the days of the Prius HSD. In three pages it explains
how the EPA tests are outdated and why hybrid vehicles are greatest affected by
the inadequacies of the tests. Also, he provided insight into how you can
improve the mileage you achieve in your Prius as well as tried and true
suggestions for improving mileage in all vehicles.
Tony was looking for an easy way to explain how the Hybrid
Synergy Drive system works in the Prius. Of course, the only real way to
understand is to drive the car. That way, you can feel the power
transitions and see the MFD. In this Power Point presentation, Tony has
combined the driving with the MFD to explain how the electric motor and gas
engine work together to power the car and recharge the battery.
This is another version of the same presentation. This
version, however, uses a voice-over provided by
Tom O'Toole.
During the 1990s, the American automobile
manufacturers were charged with the task of creating family sedans
capable of achieving 80 miles per gallon. With the backing of the
federal government and more than a billon dollars of taxpayers' money,
three prototypes were created. Sam Roe follows the Supercar's
timeline of concept, design, realization and eventual abandonment.
A must read for any car owner who wonders why we currently have to buy a
foreign car to reduce America's oil consumption.
